to move nearer.
i stopped.

this
is shelter.
asylum.
refuse turned refuge.

day by day,
the dark swathes
all around me;
the white strip
out of reach.

nothing is added.
nothing goes away.

nor does that needle
burning white,
buried
deep—

that there might come that instant
when eyelids do fly open
now kept no more aslumber
by no numb, no-end dream—

that instant when the burning
light floods white my sea of greying—

the white strip—
grown high heaven—
will bathe me,

naked me.

October 5th
I lost Jenny today. I knew one of us would eventualy close their eyes and flicker away, while the other would have to live with this painful loss for a bit more before also passing away. In a twisted way I’m glad she was first, so that she’d be spared the pain of losing me. She got up this morning, cuddled up in my arms, then whispered softly. “Tell me a story”, which I did, and by the time I was done, she was gone. I kissed her and fell into a daydream.

October 2nd
The cloud reached our apartment block. It covered everything and it’s hard to see through it. We can hear loud cries outside our window. The anguish of eons the doomcryers call it. One last gasp of despair before it’s all over. We don’t have much time left now, but at least we’re together.

September 29th
The streets are packed with cars, packed with people still trying to escape it. They knew it was impossible but still tried. They still hold on to their hope, even though it will die with them on those streets. Supplies are running low and people are now desperate enough to kill to survive. I knew it would come to this. In the end, man will scratch and claw his way away from oblivion, gasping for air and yelling like a wounded animal, killing anything in its path to survival.

September 25th
All attempts of stopping it have failed. It started to sink in just today, slowly creeping up from fears. We’re going to die and there’s nothing we can do but wait. At least now I’m with Jenny. She jumped in my arms when we met, despite the dread around us. I fear these are truely the last days.

August 3rd
I managed to catch a plane home. This thing is all over the news and people are starting to worry. I just hope Jennifer is alright! And that she’ll say “yes”! I got her a nice ring, not a very fancy one, but I hope she likes it.

July 5th
We were in the park this morning, wonderful weather and all, and the funniest thing happened. A young boy walked up to us with a box of crayons and a very large sketchbook, way too large for him. He said he’d paint us a portrait if we got him some icecream. Silly portrait that was, but we stayed true to our deal. We’ll get it framed to remind us of this lovely day and that little boy that wanted to be a painter.
